Malpensa Airport - All Information on Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP)

Located in northern Italy, Milan Malpensa Airport is the largest international airport in that part of the country. Serving 15 million people locally, as well as people living in the Swiss Canton of Ticino, Malpensa Airport saw 24,725,490 passengers in 2018, which made it Italy's 2nd busiest airport in terms of passenger numbers, after Rome-Fiumicino Airport.

The region's first industrial airport dates back to 1909, when an airfield to test aircraft prototypes was created in Malpensa, then just agricultural land. By 1948 the need for a civil airport serving the north of Italy became apparent, and post-WWII reconstruction included building an airport that would serve the city of Milan. Malpensa Airport opened officially on 21st November 1948, then as Aeroporto Città di Busto Arsizio.

During 1995 to 1998 the airport underwent redevelopment and expansion. In 2014 plans came to fruition to extend the railway line from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, and this line opened two years later in 2016. Malpensa's Terminal 2 railway line lies just 200 meters north of the terminal's Arrivals Hall and is linked to it via a covered walkway.
